Most likely to be: Horace John Pearson, born in Stetchworth in 1896 (Newmarket Q4-1896 3B:512), son of Clemence and Henrietta Julia PEARSON (née HAMMOND). 1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Mill Road, Stetchworth, with his father Clemence PEARSON [30] carpenter, born Thetford; his mother Henrietta J [34], born in Sawston and brother Harry [7] born in Dullingham. 1911 census...Aged 14, he was at Tea Kettle Lane, Mill Road, Stetchworth, still with his parents and brother Harry, (a gamekeeper). Quite when he became associated with Westley Waterless is unknown, but his parents later moved to Station Road, Dullingham. |
He enlisted in Newmarket. War Dairy:- " Carnoy June 26- 9am to 10:20 am - Much rain. Trenches, especially assembly trenches very muddy and wet.Bombardment by our artillery continues without cessation. Enemy retaliated particularly on No3 assembly trench and CARNOY-MONTAUBAN ROAD. Bombardment intensified. 10:11 am - Smoke let off all along our front. Enemy replied by shelling our front trenches Wire cutting by our 2" mortars continued throughout the day and from patrols and observation the enemy's wire was reported to be considerably damaged and in places quite cleared. A raid was carried out at night by enemy's trenches by party under 2nd Lts G.L.Crandon and E H Dixey. Full details and report are appended. All the party returned to our trenches, four being wounded. Casualties for the day 3 OR killed, 11 OR wounded. CWGC have 4 buried in Carnoy and 2 have no known grave. |
